She specializes in developing confident, capable partnerships-whether guiding a young child through their first ride or coaching competitive athletes.
Her instruction is rooted in foundational principles that honor each horse’s conformation, personality, and physical needs. Karissa incorporates classical in-hand work to enhance under-saddle training, improve movement, and deepen the horse-rider connection.
She is especially passionate about working with horses that require individualized care and riders who benefit from a thoughtful, adaptive approach-including those with special needs.
Karissa’s mission is to create a barn culture where horses and humans thrive together. She is committed to continued education and regularly pursues advanced training through FEI courses, the AQHA Pro-Horsemen Academy, and specialized seminars in nutrition, anatomy, and instructional techniques.
Her goal is to keep Sommers Lane at the forefront of equine wellness and rider development-offering a space where every partnership is nurtured with intention, expertise, and heart.
Animals have always been at the heart of my life, shaping who I am and the work I love to do. I first began volunteering at a horse stable, where I spent nearly three years simply because I couldn’t imagine being away from horses. That experience gave me not only hands-on skills but also a true appreciation for the hard work and dedication it takes to care for such incredible animals. From there, I went on to work with dogs for almost three years, which allowed me to connect with people and their pets while learning even more about the unique bond we share with animals.
Outside of work, I’m a proud mom to a beautiful baby boy and the owner of a sweet dog of my own- both of whom remind me daily why compassion and care matter so much. Being a part of Sommers Lane Equestrian Center feels like more than just a job; it’s like a home away from home. I love being part of a team that shares the same dedication to animals and to creating a welcoming environment. For me, working here is not only about what I do every day, but about being part of a place that celebrates the connection between people and the animals that enrich our lives.
After spending 15 years in the Army as an explosives expert and building a family, I wanted to return to my roots on the farm. I grew up on a cattle farm along the western border of Indiana, where hard work and being outdoors were a way of life.
After some time in the corporate world, I realized a big part of me was missing-working with my hands, seeing the results of a day’s labor, and being connected to the land. I’ve been riding horses since the age of four, and it remains a passion that I now share with my family. My four children ride whenever they can, and my wife also enjoys being in the saddle.
For me, working at Sommers Lane Equestrian Center feels more than just a job-it’s like being with family. The combination of maintaining the grounds, caring for the environment, and being outdoors brings me back to what I value most.
Upon graduating from the Jacobs School of Music with a B.M. in Music Composition in 2019, James Adams and his family embarked on a venture to start a Christmas tree farm. They purchased a picturesque farm in Cicero, where they planted a few thousand baby trees and have been eagerly anticipating the day when these saplings will mature into magnificent Christmas trees. James currently tends to his two delightful corgis and seven spirited goats, finding joy in their lively companionship. While waiting for the trees to grow, James began working at Sommers Lane in 2021. At Sommers Lane, he has taken on the responsibilities of tending to the horses’ general husbandry and performing maintenance around the property. Although James did not grow up around horses, he has developed a profound appreciation for these majestic creatures. He enjoys getting to know the individual personalities and quirks of each horse, building a unique bond with them. This experience has enriched his life, providing him with new skills and a deeper understanding of animal care. James Adams’ journey from college graduate to Christmas tree farmer and equestrian caretaker is a testament to his adaptability and passion for working with animals. His story is one of dedication, hard work, and a love for nature and its inhabitants.
